“Bad artists copy. Good artists steal.” Words I stole from none other than Picasso because, well, his words made a better introduction for this story than mine could. No matter what we do or where we go, it is inevitable that some of our best creations come from stealing bits of our surroundings. Which is why when I came across Stolen, the brand behind the world’s first smoked rum and an 11-year-aged whiskey, I stole again.
Stolen is inspired by street culture and music from across the globe. Apparently, there ain’t no party like a Stolen party. I figured if there’s anything worth stealing, it was a playlist curated by their always fabulous VP of marketing, Claudia Gassel. I also stole her best flight hacks and craziest travel story. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get this party started.
Flight route: Chicago, Illinois to San Diego, California
Your last vacation destination: My last vacation was with a group of friends to a great home rental called The Flamingo Ranch in Lakeside, Mich. It’s just an hour and a half from Chicago and I have rented it about half a dozen times with different groups. With a TeePee, Vintage Pink Cadillac by the fire pit, and the coziest beds, The Flamingo Ranch is relaxing and renewing. My next trip is to San Diego for CRSSD Fest!
You never travel without: I have my own essentials kit that is on me at all times. It has a quip toothbrush, toothpaste, earplugs, $100 cash, 2 Aleve, 2 Ambien, 2 sets of contacts, 2 EO lavender hand wipes, 1 hair tie, a Kiehl’s butter stick, and an empty Ziploc bag. The list is fairly basic but that Ziploc is a lifesaver. From keeping my phone dry to clearing liquids through TSA and acting as an ice mask after a long day of travel, I never leave home without it!
Your best flight hack: Our new 100mL cans of Stolen X (2.25 shots) are TSA approved and fit right into your carry-on bag so you’re ready to start your vacation as soon as you land (or in-flight)— not sorry about the shameless brand plug, you will thank me.
Your craziest travel story: I am one of the few people that I know that have been in a full-on emergency landing. Leaving Munich, my airplane’s left engine backfired and started on fire. After about an hour of dumping gas (while seeing actual flames) we returned to an exterior tarmac and bumped our way down. Landing gear melted, crying turned into cheers and the whole plane exited safely. I now consider myself statistically one of the safest travel partners you could have!
