Press Play with Silent Addy

It’s the late 1970s in Kingston, Jamaica. Bar counters and street parties are buzzing with the sound of something new. This sound would take decades to reach the rest of us, but when it did, the music scene wouldn’t be the same. It was the sound of dancehall.

Before dancehall made it to your mainstream American radio station, it was heard on the decks of DJs at underground parties. And if you’re in Miami, it was probably brought to you by Silent Addy. Hailing from Kingston himself, the DJ and producer’s impact on the Miami music scene has been anything but silent. Yes, he headlines some of the biggest Caribbean events, but his own parties have garnered quite the loyal (and star-studded) following. And when I say star-studded, I’m talking Diplo and Sean Paul, to name a humble few.

Silent Addy

Silent Addy has played his part in bringing Jamaican culture to the forefront and proving that, in his words, “you don’t need a lot of words to make a lot of noise.” In very few words, we caught up with the DJ to get his travel hacks, stories, and most importantly, his travel playlist.

Flight route: Miami, Florida to Kingston, Jamaica

Your last vacation destination: My last trip was to New York. Even though it was a work trip, I love the city so it always feels like a vacation when I’m there.

You never travel without: I never travel without a smile, my phone, and my laptop.

Your best flight hack: Always show up early to the flight, bring wipes and hand sanitizer.

Your craziest travel story: There are so many crazy stories. The first time I ever went to Italy to DJ, I took an 8-hour train ride from Milan to Salento. The promoter of the party didn’t give me a reserved seat so I was just sitting on the floor in the hallway of the train. Every stop there were people trying to get on the train without a ticket and the police had to keep coming on the train and chasing them out, it was chaos. I know it doesn’t sound that crazy, but I promise you it was. You just had to be there.

Where inspires your music right now: Jamaica and Nigeria
